What is HoLEP?
Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate, commonly known as HoLEP, is a surgical treatment for urinary symptoms caused by benign prostate enlargement (BPH). It is an advanced laser technique that removes excess prostate tissue to improve urine flow and relieve symptoms such as weak stream, frequent urination, and difficulty emptying the bladder.
How does HoLEP work?
The procedure is carried out internally using a camera passed through the urethra. A specialised laser is used to carefully separate and remove the obstructive prostate tissue. This approach allows for more complete tissue removal compared to some other methods.
At the end of the procedure, a urinary catheter is placed the help drain the bladder. Most patients stay in hospital overnight and go home the following day.
Why choose HoLEP?
HoLEP is an effective option for men with moderate to severe prostate enlargement, offering long lasting symptom relief. It is particularly useful in cases where a significant amount of prostate tissue needs to be removed.
This procedure has excellent durability, but patients should be aware of the potential risks. There is significant chance of temporary incontinence in the first few months following surgery, as well as a high likelihood of ejaculatory changes. However, recent studies have shown no impact on erectile quality.
Why choose HoLEP?
Men with benign prostatic enlargement have several treatment options, including:
- Medication such as alpha-blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors
- Minimally invasive techniques such as UroLift or Rezūm
- Surgical procedures such as TURP or HoLEP
- Laser treatments including HoLEP for more complete tissue removal
